School History Walls & Art Through Healing

La Conner History Wall Mixed Media Collages

The La Conner Schools History Wall. Assemblage Art Mixed Med

The wall runs 60 feet down the main entrance of the Middle School. It is available for viewing between 8:30 to 4:00 weekdays.

Doors, slate chalkboards and desks were salvaged from old schools and repurposed in the installation.

The original auditorium seats were mounted on a stage created out of old gym floor and used in the historical wall as part of the framework for the piece.

Forty collages were created digitally by photographing old ledgers, photographs and maps to create a timeline of the schools.

Each decade was honored, showcasing the events of the times; both at the school and in the community.

Historical research spanned the newspapers archives and the museums records of happenings in the schools and town.

Anacortes Schools History Wall 2018. Assemblage Art Mixed M

The wall is located in the common area of the high school is over a thousand square feet.

The wall uses vintage postcards and photographs to tell the story of education in Anacortes. All were digitally altered and enlarged.

An alcove is set into the center of the wall and includes a sculpture created out of globes, a ships wheel, tools and vintage typewriters, set against the backdrop of images and a promotional map from 1890.

The Arts exploded on the scene in the 1960's and have become a defining value for the town. This wall honors student art and the programs that support them.

Collages were created using vintage photographs, school ledgers and immigration papers. They were digitally altered and printed with postcards sharing the story.

Traditions continue in Anacortes with many finding their origins back nearly a hundred years. The collages share those stories and tie the past with the present traditions that students experience today.

Two thirty foot murals were created for the pediatric floors at Mary Bridge in Tacoma.

They were created out of acrylic paint and collaged paper. The final panels were varnished so that they could be regularly cleaned.

Details were added for children to find. A coloring book was also created for pediatric patients to use during their hospital stays.

I collaborate with the design teams, working in color palettes that compliment the space.

The original sketches are done in colored pencil and then recreated in a larger scale on the panels.

Wildlife native to the Salish Sea were showcased and tucked into the murals for children to discover.

Snapshots of Hospital mixed media murals and Installations

Skagit Valley Hospital. Kincaid Lobby. Mount Vernon. Art thr

This installation is four Guardians created out of recycled mixed media, framed in shadow boxes. Each represents a theme selected by the Art committee for the hospital.

The recycled materials used for the figures were collected in the Skagit Valley area and  were repurposed in the design of these assemblage art sculptures.

The figures are not covered so that the viewer can really see the parts used. They have remained untouched for over 10 years.

A vintage stethoscope and tiny medicine bottles were repurposed and wired together to create a garland on one of the assemblage art figures.

Layers of hearts and hands were used on one of the pieces called "Compassion." Each piece was designed with the intention of Art through Healing.

Skagit Valley, known for it's farmlands and fertile soil is honored with vintage seed packets and a rake from a local farm.
